Historical Note
The Council on Undergraduate Research, known as CUR, supports and promotes high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.
CUR was founded in 1978 by a group of chemists from liberal arts colleges who wanted to document research being undertaken at liberal arts colleges by faculty, often in collaboration with students. It now includes all disciplines from all kinds of institutions, with over 13,000 individual members and over 700 colleges and universities.
Scope and Contents
Contains documents and photographs related to the Council on Undergraduate Research. The materials are thought to originate from Dr. John Stevens who served as the first National Executive Officer of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), and worked in the chemistry department at UNC Asheville from 1968, until his retirement in 2013.
Primarily covering the years 1980 to 1993, the collection includes published materials such as meeting/conference programs, newsletters and magazines. There are also materials reflecting Dr. Stevens' personal involvement with CUR, and these include handwritten notes and correspondence from committees, and photographs from the 1996 national conference and other unidentified events.
