Historical Note
Eliada Home orphanage was opened in 1906 by Eliada Reverend Lucius B. Compton in a small cabin about five miles from Asheville, NC. Land was acquired through purchases and donations until the campus swelled to over 1200 acres, and buildings added. The children and staff maintained the property in a variety of ways: they bottled and sold milk from Dr. Compton’s prize Guernsey cows, they kept chickens, sold eggs, grew much of their food, canned and pickled the produce, and helped with the maintenance of the land and buildings. Nowadays Eliada has shifted from the orphanage/dormitory setting to a more family oriented residential care facility.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents related to Eliada Homes Inc. and includes legal documents, administrative materials, requests for admission, pamphlets, tax reports, "The Eliada Banner," scrapbooks, marketing materials, deeds, correspondence including that of Lucius Bunyon Compton, publications by,and about, Eliada including "New Testament Christian" (1909 - 1981), and "Faces of Eliada" (1982 - 2004). Also included is information and photographs of the Elias family.
A further donation of reports, and publicity materials was received from Eliada in May 2017, and has been identified as such in the finding aid.
