Historical Note

In 1904, Dr. Robert Carroll founded a sanitarium on Haywood Street in Asheville. Two years later, the sanitarium relocated to 80 acres of land that Carroll had purchased on Zillicoa Street, and was renamed Highland Hospital. The hospital aimed to achieve "brain health" in patients through a combination of diet, exercise, and revolutionary treatments, including electroshock, insulin, and horse serum injections. Carroll gave the hospital to Duke University in 1939, but he stayed on as Medical Director until 1946, when he retired at the age of 77. In 1948, a fire in the Central Building killed nine patients, including Zelda Fitzgerald, who were being treated at the hospital. Duke sold the property to Psychiatric Institutes of America (PIA) in 1980. In 1982, PIA was purchased by National Medical Enterprises Inc. of California, who ran the hospital until 1993, when it was closed.
