Historical Note
The Montford Community Development Plan was a citizens initiated project that called for the selective acquisition, relocation, limited demolition, rehabilitation, and redevelopment of the Hill-Cherry Street neighborhood of the Montford area of Asheville. The aims of the project were: - Preserve the diversity of the neighborhood - Upgrade the image of the neighborhood - Encourage limited commercial development - Expand and improve housing stock - Preserve the historic character - Improve landscaping, lighting and other amenities - Upgrade infrastructure - Improve quality of life for inhabitants

Custodial History
The records of the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville were acquired by UNCA in July 2007, and the legal transfer of ownership occurred on October 16, 2007 when the Asheville City Council approved the transfer of the material files and photographs and provided a subsidy for the processing of the collection. Since then, additional materials were identified and acquired in 2008.

Initially processed by Special Collections staff, students, and volunteers, 2007-2012. Physical reprocessing and finding aid updates by Special Collection students and interns, 2016-17.
