Biographical Note

Wooster Baird McEwen was born on March 26, 1874 in New Haven, Connecticut and he married Caroline Marie Nichols in Barnards (Barnardsville), NC on July 1904. Caroline was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nichols, and at the time of the wedding, McEwen was president of the McEwen-Gibson Lumber Company of Asheville. Caroline was a member of the Young Women’s Christian Association and chairman of the membership committee.

They lived on Chestnut Street in Asheville, until around 1923, when they moved to High Point, NC

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a photograph album dated 1906 with images of Asheville, Lake Toxaway, Biltmore House, Biltmore Village, and other scenic mountain sites. In addition, there is a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings covering the wedding of Wooster McEwen and Caroline Nichols, the death of Charles Nichols, social events, and a collection of travel souvenirs, including hotel advertisements, and menus. There are a few photographs of the McEwen's children, and a program noting the death of Mr. McEwen.
