Biographical Note
After writing novels, volumes of short stories, and working in Hollywood, in 1932 William Dudley Pelley (1890-1965) moved to Asheville. Here he began to write and publish magazines and papers espousing the Liberation Doctrine and Soulcraft philosophy, which focused on higher planes of existence, and the evolution of souls. Pelley formed the the Silver Legion of America (Silver Shirts) (1933) and the Christian Party of America (1935) to promote his anticommunist and anti-Semitic beliefs.
In 1940 Pelley relocated to Noblesville, Indiana
