- The Pride Newspaper Collection contains 11 boxes of LGBTQ+ periodicals published in Western North Carolina from 1987-2010. Included are Community Connections, The Front Page, Out in Asheville, Stereotypd, and Q Notes, plus LGBTQ themed articles from other regional newspapers. The colleciton was donated as part of the Asheville Pride Oral History Project, a collaboration of UNC Asheville and Asheville Pride.

Arrangement Note
The Pride Newspaper Collection contains 11 boxes of periodicals and documents related to the LGBTQ+ community in Western North Carolina and the broader Carolinas.
Box 1 contains issues of Community Connections newspaper ranging from 1991-2003. This paper focuses on gay and lesbian news and events in Southern Appalachia. The content largely focuses on AIDS and gay health, activism for gay and lesbian equality, as well as local and regional events such as NC Pride.
Box 2 contains issues of The Front Page, a gay and lesbian newspaper serving North and South Carolina, that range from 1987-2006. The 1980s-1990s papers include information about AIDS and gay health, local and national politics, and community events. Later papers focus on political issues such as the war on terror, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the fight for marriage equality and protection from discrimination as well as continuing to report on regional events such as NC Pride.
Boxes 3-5 contain Out in Asheville Newspapers, with issues from 2005-2008. This paper serves the GLBT community in Western North Carolina. The content of these papers include local news, some state and national news, community resources, community connections/personal ads, and a community calendar with local events. Later papers include discussion of spirituality and religion.
Box 6 contains issues of Stereotypd, an LGBTQ periodical serving North and South Carolina, with issues from 2009-2010. In 2010, Stereotypd switched from a newspaper to magazine format. These periodicals focus on regional and national politics, a community calendar, transgender issues, intersex issues, AIDS and LGBTQ health.
Boxes 7 & 8 contain issues of Q Notes, a GLBT newspaper serving North and South Carolina, with issues from 2004-2009. Content includes national and regional news, gay health, fashion, regional events, classifieds and personal ads.
Box 9 contains miscellaneous periodicals with LGBT content, including several issues of the Asheville Times with articles on the AIDS crisis and religion, as well as articles on religion and hate speech in the Green Line and a section on LGBTQ+ people of the Carolinas in Independent Weekly. This box also includes single isues of the gay newspaper Carolina Pulse and the LGBT paper In Unison.
Box 10 contains issues of the Altamont, an Asheville-based gay and lesbian periodical, from 1985-1986. These papers contain editorials, local news, personals and classifieds, and extensive events calendars for Asheville gay bars and clubs. This box also contains one issue of the independent publication Rhyming For Daze, a “Country Journal for Gay Men Everywhere” from Summer 1981. This periodical contains poetry, letters from gay prisoners, information on gardening, homesteading and cooking, and pieces on politics and spirituality. RFD is a paper produced by members of the Radical Faeries, a countercultural gay men’s movement focused on spirituality, nature and left wing politics.
Box 11 contains miscellaneous documents including a written evaluation form and presentation on AIDS prevention and treatment, a copy of Dr. Loreena Russel’s thesis on same sex marriage, and several issues of Asheville’s gay business directory Purple Pages from 2003-2006. The box also includes misc. Flyers, pamphlets and documents related to WNC LGBTQ+ events, WNC Pride, community resources, UNCA’s campus LGBTQ+ community, political activism and spirituality, as well as copies of Radical Faeries photographs.
