Scope and Contents
The collection comprises photocopies of what are believed to be the first and second editions of "Whither, The Beloved Mountains", a manuscript written, and likely self published, by Carl A. Reiche. The manuscript describes the struggle to save the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, and preserve it as a national wilderness area. In addition, the favorite walks of the author are described, and an appendix includes newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence.
Little is known about Carl A. Reiche. In the manuscript he is identified as the coordinator of the Save-Joyce-Kilmer League, and he appears to have lived in Florida and Robbinsville, NC. The second edition of the manuscript includes a Library of Congress catalog number, but no record is identified in the LC catalog. Any copyright owner is unknown.
