Biographical Note

George Adams Shuford was born in Asheville on September 5, 1985, and was a lawyer in the city. He was also chair of the Buncombe County board of elections, served in the State House of Representatives , and was a State superior court judge. He was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat, and served from January 3, 1953 to January 3, 1959. Although he was renominated in the 1958 election, he later withdrew because of ill health, returning to practice law in Asheville, where he lived until his death on December 8, 1962.

Scope and Contents

Contains three scrapbooks documenting the career of George A. Shuford in the US House of Representatives from 1953 to 1958. The materials in the first two volumes are arranged, it is not known by whom, into the sections as noted in this finding aid. Although chronologically continuing from volume two, the clippings in the third volume cover all topics. This third volume also includes a small number of photographs of Shuford, his constituents, and other political figures. Notable among the subjects covered by the clippings are a proposal to charge for using the Blue Ridge Parkway, and construction of a road along the north shore of Fontana Lake.
