Historical Note

In the spring of 2008 University of North Carolina at Asheville history students helped to organize an exhibit showcasing Asheville’s Greek and Russian Orthodox communities. In conjunction with that exhibit, students of the Public History class interviewed members of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church.

Scope and Contents

This collection comprises interviews with members of the Greek and Russian Orthodox congregations in western North Carolina. Each interview includes a transcript or abstract / tape log. The interviewees describe their personal histories and how their church has influenced them. The scope and contents are described for each interview.

Raised a Methodist, and later an Episcopalian, Mia Peterson Gilman and her husband joined the Greek Orthodox Church in Asheville in 1970. Father Demetrios Iliou was born in Greece but moved to the US when he was six years old. Anna Keith describes her childhood in a Jewish family in Washington, and her marriage to Paul Keith, a Roman Catholic, although neither she or her husband were that religious. She talks about the process that lead to both of them converting to the Russian Orthodox church, her husband becoming a priest, and subsequently moving to Asheville. Later she talks about life in Asheville and raising her daughter.

Scope and Contents

Herman Middleton explains how, as the son of a diplomat,he traveled the world during his childhood, experiencing many religions, but considered himself a High Church Anglican, until he discovered Orthodoxy when he was a student at Wheaton College. He tells of his research into the Orthodox religions, including spending six months in a monastery, studying in Greece, and gaining a PhD. He also talks about a further visit to Greece, and compares Orthodoxy and Protestantism.

Mary and Angelos Pappas

The Pappas' talk about their family, and Greek traditions. Angelos Pappas describes his childhood in Greece, and moving to the US in 1939, where he lived in several different places before moving to Asheville, where he met his wife Mary. They ran a restaurant in Asheville, for over sixty years, before retiring.

Stamatia Sigmon talks about growing up in Asheville, where her father owned a hat shop, and she attended Greek school every afternoon after regular school. She explains how, in 1913, her father left Greece for the US, eventually moving to Asheville, which is where her mother and father met. She talks about the roles the church and the Greek community played in her life, marrying a non-Greek, and the changes she has seen in the church.

She also talks about the Greek festival in Asheville.
