Scope and Contents

An album containing 23 tintypes and 10 card prints, mounted in card pages. The card prints usually have the photographer's and/or studio information printed on the rear, some include the subject's name, but only one is dated. With the exception of #2, all the images seem to have been taken in a studio.

The album has the inscription, "Julia Britt. Presented by a friend", but nothing is known about Britt, when or where she lived. Many subjects in the album share similar facial characteristics, but who they are, their relationships, and why the images were collected in this album are not known.

Acquisition Note

The album was donated to Ramsey Library by Edward Ellis, an historian specializing in the history of Craven County, NC. The album was purportedly dug up from the south shore of the Neuse River below Havelock in Craven County, in 2007. Ellis held on to the album for a number of years, and attempted to research the history of the album, and in 2018 he donated the album to UNC Asheville, since many of the photographers were from Asheville.
