Scope and Contents

Mostly contains miscellaneous photographic negatives of unknown origin(s) and source(s). Some may be copies made of images in other collections within Special Collections, and few, if any, seem to be original negatives. The materials generally cover the Asheville and Western North Carolina geographic area, with the exception of one series of negatives that cover an unidentified city. It is difficult to date many of the images, but they all seem be from the early 20th century. In addition, there are nine 35mm transparencies dated 1998, showing downtown Asheville buildings and architecture.

Custodial History

The provenance of the materials in this collection is unknown. The materials were discovered in Special Collections in 2016, but no record of their origin has, so far, been found. With the possible exception of three images of Pack Square, none of the negatives appear to be original, and many could be copy negatives if images in other collections held by the Ramsey Library. No attempts to match such duplicates, or remove them from this collection, have been made. The nine transparencies show architectural features of buildings and may have been used for a class but, if so, this has not been recorded.
