Historical Note
The management of Biltmore College and Asheville-Biltmore College was effectively the responsibility of a college board comprised of local business and civic leaders. The name of this board varied, sometimes within the space of a single document, with College Board, Board of Directors, and Board of Trustees, being used. Similarly, although the the chartered name of the institution was changed to Asheville-Biltmore College in 1936, records continue to refer to "Biltmore College" until 1945, when the Board passed a resolution that the full name, "Asheville-Biltmore College" was to be used.
Since the creation of the University of North Carolina Asheville in 1969, the Board of Trustees has served as advisors to the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina (System) on matters pertaining to the UNC Asheville campus. The Board also advises the Chancellor on the management and development of UNC Asheville.
Scope and Contents
This archive holds historically significant official papers of of the college boards of Biltmore College and Asheville-Biltmore College, and the Board of Trustees of the university of North Carolina Asheville. Materials include minutes and associated materials for the Board, and minutes for committees. Gaps exist, especially for committee materials.
The materials were received from various sources, preventing any original ordering. The materials have therefore been condensed and arranged chronologically within files with duplicate materials within a file being removed during processing. Committee materials were sometimes included with Board materials, whilst at other times, they were separated. To obtain some consistency, during processing committee materials have been separated by committee name. One notable exception is meetings of the Executive prior to around 2000. These meetings seem to have been a continuation of Board meetings, with generally the same attendees, and have therefore been filed with the relevant Board meeting. Ad-hoc committees have been formed for various purposes and these, usually short lived, committees are grouped alphabetically after the files for standing committees.
