Biographical Note
James Mullen was elected as the fifth Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Asheville on April 9, 1999 and took office on August 1, 1999.
Dr. Mullen was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on March 20, 1958, and graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 1980 after majoring in history. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1984, and received his doctorate in higher education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1994. Prior to UNC-A he had been at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut; Middlesex Community College, Lowell, Massachusetts; and worked for both the City of Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
During Dr. Mullen's chancellorship, a number of initiatives, such as the Pisgah Astronomical Research, Science and Education Center, and green construction on campus, were launched; UNC-A was named listed as a top 5 Public Liberal Arts College by U.S. News & World Report; and the athletics program was awarded NCAA certification. In 2003, the men's basketball team won the Big South Conference.
On December 8, 2004, Dr. Mullen announced that he would leave office in May 2005 to become president of Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
