Biographical Note
Asheville native, Eleanor Anne Ponder was born on April 26, 1950, and was elected as the sixth chancellor of the University of North Carolina Asheville in May 2005. She took office on October 1, 2005. Dr. Ponder attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned bachelor's (1971), master's (1973), and doctorial (1979), degrees in English.
Dr. Ponder taught at Elon College (1977-1986), and then at Guilford College (1986-1989), before moving to Kenyon College in Ohio, where she served as professor of English and drama, academic dean, and vice president for information technology from 1989 to 1996. From 1996 until she moved to UNC-A, Dr. Ponder had been president of Colby-Sawyer College, NH.
During Dr. Ponder's chancellorship a substantial building program was undertaken, with the Sam Millar Facilities Management Complex (2007), the Janice W. Brumit Pisgah House (2010), the Wilma M. Sherrill Center (2011), and Overlook Hall(2012), opening, and the campus expanded through the purchase of nearby properties. Academic changes included new majors in anthropology, religious studies, jazz and contemporary music, and the start of the UNC-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy satellite program at Asheville.
On January 16, 2014 Anne Ponder announced that she would retire as chancellor on July 31, 2014, making her the second longest serving chancellor, with only William Highsmith having a longer tenure.
