Biographical Note

On August 1, 2014, the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina elected Mary K. Grant as the next Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Dr. Grant, who had previously served for 12 years as president of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), became Chancellor on January 5, 2015. Dr. Grant resigned as Chancellor at the end of the Fall 2017 semester to accept the position of President of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

Mary Grant earned an undergraduate degree in sociology from MCLA, a master’s degree in public affairs from the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Public Policy and Global Studies at UMass Boston, and a doctorate in social policy from The Heller School at Brandeis University. Starting her education career as a research assistant at UMass Boston, Dr. Grant then held several key administrative positions at the McCormack Institute of Public Affairs at UMass, and served as chair of the Institute’s faculty. Dr. Grant was Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer for UMassOnline, until moving to MCLA.

This archive holds historically significant official papers of Mary K. Grant, Chancellor of UNC Asheville. Currently, only salutes from other universities and colleges on the occasion of Mary Grant's installation as chancellor, and the installation program, are archived.
