Biographical Information
In June 1962 William Edward Highsmith was appointed as president of Asheville-Biltmore College, a position he held until 1969, when he became the first chancellor of the newly created UNC-Asheville. Highsmith was born in Eastland, Texas on March 21, 1920 and received a MA (1947) and Ph.D (1953) in history from Louisiana State University. Immediately prior to Asheville-Biltmore College, he had been dean of the faculty at Jacksonville University, having previously worked at the University of Arkansas (1949-50), LSU Caribbean Program (1951-1954), and the Gadsden Center of University of Alabama (1954-1957).
Scope and Content
This archive holds historically significant official papers from when Highsmith was president of Asheville-Biltmore College. Although Highsmith papers after the creation of UNC-Asheville are archived in series UA3.3, there is an overlap with this series since the process to change from college to university occurred over many months. Highsmith's personal (non college) papers are archived in series UA3.4.
