Biographical Information
David Brown was appointed as the second chancellor of UNC-Asheville in May 1984, and took office July 1, on the retirement of the previous chancellor, William Highsmith. A native of Chicago, Brown was born in 1936 and obtained an A.B (Denison University, 1958), M.A. and Ph.D. (Princeton University, 1961) in economics. Before moving UNC-A, he had been a special consultant to the Association of Governing Boards, Project on Strengthening Presidential Leadership (1983-84), and worked at Transylvania University (1982-83), Miami University (1970-82), Drake University (1967-70), University of Minnesota (1966-67) and UNC Chapel Hill (1961-66).
Dr. Brown's tenure at UNC-A was marked by a commitment of increasing education and amenities for seniors citizens at the university, improving access to campus from downtown Asheville, and promoting UNC-A as a "small public ivy".
In June 1990, David Brown resigned, to become Provost at Wake Forest University.

This archive holds historically significant official papers of David G. Brown, Chancellor of UNC-Asheville, 1984-1990. As programs and events do not necessarily commence or end with a change of chancellor, there is some overlap from the previous chancellor, William Highsmith, and some topics covered by this archive will continue into subsequent chancellor(s).
