Biographical Note

On May 10, 1991, Samuel Schuman was named as the third chancellor of UNC Asheville. He was born in Chicago, IL and studied at Grinnel College (BA), San Francisco State (MA) and Northwestern (PhD), before embarking on a career teaching English in colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana and Maine. Immediately prior to moving to Asheville, he was Vice president for Academic Affairs at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.

Although he was chancellor for a relatively short time, it was during Dr. Schuman’s chancellorship that UNC Asheville was officially designated a “Liberal Arts I” campus by the Board of Governors, and programs, such as an African-American Student Colloquium, were created to enhance minority students’ experience on campus.

In August 1993, Dr. Schuman unexpectedly announced that he would not be continuing as chancellor since his “vision….priorities….and administrative style” did “not conform” to the expectations of UNC President C. D. Spangler. After stepping down, he taught English literature before leaving UNCA in May 1995, to become Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean at the University of Minnesota at Morris. He was subsequently appointed chancellor at UMM (2000-2006), and for one year served as the Caruthers Chair Visiting Distinguished Professorship in the Honors College of University of New Mexico, before returning to UNCA, where he held several different part-time roles, including teaching.

Samuel Schuman died November 11, 2014.

Scope and Content

This archive holds personal papers and materials donated by Nancy Schuman, the widow of Chancellor Sam Schuman, in April 2016, and follows two distinct themes. Firstly, there are copies of speeches and lectures given by Sam Schuman during the time he was chancellor of UNC Asheville. Included are speeches to university students and/or faculty, as well as to the general community and other organizations. Secondly, there are the contents of two scrapbooks compiled by Martha Game, Nancy Schuman's mother. The scrapbooks primarily comprised news clippings, and other documents, related to Sam Schuman from his appointment as chancellor through to him leaving leaving UNC Asheville in 1995. For archival preservation, materials were removed from scrapbooks, and where removal was not possible, photocopies of the appropriate pages were made and included in this archive.
