Biographical Note

In 1969, when Asheville-Biltmore College became the University of North Carolina at Asheville, the position of Dean of the Faculty was carried over to the new university. Dr. Roy A. Riggs, who had been dean of Asheville-Biltmore College since 1967, continued in the role until 1971, when the dean was replaced by the new postion of Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, at which time Riggs became the first Vice Chancellor. Roy Riggs retired from UNC-Asheville in 1978.

Scope and Contents

This archive holds historically significant official papers of Roy Riggs, Dean of UNC-Asheville from the creation of the university in 1969, until 1971, when the dean position was superceded by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Riggs served as both Dean of Asheville-Biltmore College and Vice Chancellor of UNC-Asheville, meaning there is a continuum between this archive and UA4.1 and UA4.3.
