Biographical Note
Dr. Laurence A. Dorr became Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UNC-Ashville on July 1, 1978. He had obtained a BA in classical languages, and a MA in philosophy, from Boston College, and a Ph.D. in university administration from the University of Michigan. Before moving to Asheville, he had been Assistant to the President of Boston College, Associate Dean of the School of Education, Central Michigan University, and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Kean College of New Jersey. In additional to his VCAA role, Dr. Dorr served as chair of the Philosophy Department, and Humanities program professor. His wife, Joyce Dorr, was professor of music and coordinator of the music program at UNC-Asheville. On September 24 1985, Laurence Dorr announced that he would resign from the Vice-Chancellor role and become a full-time philosophy professor at UNC-A from the fall of 1986. He formally stepped down on June 30, 1986, and Dr. Jeff Rackham, chair of the department of Literature and Language, was appointed acting vice-chancellor for 1986-87.

This archive holds historically significant official papers of Laurence A. Dorr, the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs of UNC-Asheville, from 1978 to 1986.
