Biographical Note

Born in 1942, Jeffrey A. Rackham joined the faculty of UNC Ashville in 1980, where he became chairman of the Literature & Language department and associate professor of Literature.

Following the resignation of Laurence Dorr, the Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Rackham, Acting Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1986. Rackham declined appeals to apply for the permanent vice-chancellorship and, when Lauren Wilson became the Vice Chancellor on July 1, 1987, Rackam returned to the department of Literature and Language.

He retired from UNC-A in 2006, and died in Asheville on June 24, 2009

This archive holds historically significant official papers of Jeff Rackham, Acting Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs of UNC Asheville, during the 1986-1987 academic year. Materials from Dr. Rackham's role as chair of the department of Literature & Language, a position he held before and after his acting vice chancellorship, are not included in this archive.
