Historical Note
Although former Chancellor William Highsmith's "The University of North Carolina at Asheville: The First Sixty Years" (25) reports the existence of an alumni association in November 1947, only scant records exist from 1949 to 1958. During its early years the alumni association seems to have had a precarious existence. In early 1954, it was "not active", but by November 1954, officers had been elected and a newsletter issued. However, in November 1963, Highsmith noted in a letter (UA3.2), that the alumni association was "quite inactive", and without a constitution. When Asheville-Biltmore became a senior college, the alumni association was reorganized and was incorporated in 1966, to advance the cause of education and establish a relationship between the college and alumni. Further changes were necessitated by the the creation of UNC-Asheville in 1969, and in 1971, the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Asheville was incorporated, replacing the Asheville-Biltmore College Alumni Association.

This archive primarily holds historically significant materials regarding the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina Asheville between 1969 and 1994. Some records relating to the Asheville-Biltmore College Alumni Association, which preceded the Alumni Association of UNC-A are included..
