Historical Note

Leadership Asheville was started in 1982 by Alfred Canon, when he was vice-chancellor of UNC Asheville. Modeled on similar programs elsewhere in the country, and run in conjunction with the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, the purpose of the program was to train potential leaders, and encourage them to assume civic and political leadership in the community. The program has, at various times, included community leadership programs in other counties and towns in Western North Carolina.

Scope and Contents

Contains historically significant materials from community development programs at UNC Asheville. Most of the records cover the Leadership Asheville Program, but there are also records from Leadership Hendersonville, Leadership Haywood, and Youth Leadership Asheville. Numerous gaps exist and no series is complete.
