Historical Note

In the late 1960's, just prior to the creation of UNC-Asheville, the some of the faculty of Asheville-Biltmore College began to lobby for the creation of an elected faculty senate, arguing that meetings of the full faculty that hitherto had considered and ruled on matters, were becoming protracted and unworkable due to the growing size of the faculty body. Although some faculty were opposed to the idea of a senate, in the spring of 1969 a faculty senate of fifteen people was established, with responsibility for reviewing changes to academic programs, faculty welfare, and considering ideas for the development of the university. Currently, the senate has eighteen elected members, plus the Provost, in a ex-officio role, and is empowered to act as the legislative body of the faculty.
