Scope and Contents

The Fifth Annual African Americans in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Conference was a three-day event from Oct. 18-20, 2018. The conference featured a variety of topics, including race in education, social justice, and history while highlighting regional African American culture, with a theme of “Making the Invisible Visible.”

This collection includes audio recordings made at the opening reception held at the YMI Cultural Centre on October 18, and at the morning sessions of the first day of the conference on October 19.

Also includes audio recordings made at the ceremony to name UNC Asheville's Mullen and James Humanities Hall on October 19, 2018.
