(1911-1954) The Travelers Aid Society of Asheville (1919?-1954) Family and Children's Service (1940?-1954) United Social Services (1954 [1955]-1965) Family Counseling Service (1965-1982) Family Services Center (1982-?) The history of the interrelationship of these agencies is complicated. The oldest of the agencies, the Mission of the Good Samaritan, was founded in 1911 as a service organization which would care for visitors to the city who had come for health reasons. The agency was a joint effort of local ministers, interested laypeople, and members of fraternal organizations in Asheville. The director of the agency was called the Chaplain, and he was required to be an ordained minister. The Travelers Aid Society was also founded in the 'teens, but the exact date is unclear. The organization provided assistance to travelers coming to or passing through Asheville. The society had a desk at the Southern Railway station, and later at the new Greyhound Station when it opened. The Family and Children's Service (originally named the Family Service Bureau) provided conventional social work services to families in Asheville and Buncombe County from 1940 until 1954. In 1954, these three organizations merged to form United Social Services. The name was changed 10 years later to Family Counseling Service, at which time the organization dropped the chaplainry. The name changed yet again in 1982 to Family Services Center. One note about the Minutes of United Social Services: there were several sets of minutes in the files. The "official set", which bears the signature of the recording secretary, comes first in the sequence, followed by the duplicates.
