| Biography |
Lorence Rapoport (October 8, 1919-August 13, 1999) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts to Azar and Gussie Rapoport. He was raised in Hartford Connecticut and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with an A.B. degree in 1941 and a PhD from Duke University in 1945. Dr. Rapoport pursued a 40 year career in various research and development positions in the chemical industry, primarily at American Cyanamid and Olin Corporation. After retiring in 1985 he kept busy as an adjunct professor in the chemistry department at UNC-A. He also participated actively in the UNC Institute for Creative Retirement as well as the College for Seniors and the Senior Academy for Intergenerational Learning, the United Way and AARP’s Tax Counseling for the elderly. Dr. Rapoport was an active member of the Asheville Jewish Community serving as president of the B’nai Brith Lodge, the Asheville Jewish Community Center, and the Temple Brotherhood. He served on the Board of Temple Beth Ha-Tephila. He, his wife Shirley and their three daughters lived at 175 Windsor Road in Asheville.
