Subject Keyword | Ratzell, Reverend Francis Edgar (d.1964) ; Asheville's First Congregational Church, desegregation, Allen School, Highland Hospital |
Description |
This collection consists primarily of sermons delivered during the period of 1945
through 1964. From 1951 until 1964, Frank Ratzell was pastor of Asheville's First
Congregational Church. He was also a member of the Human Relations Council, which aided in
the quiet integration of local motels and restaurants. The papers contain the
notes and minutes of meetings from 1962-1967. These papers deal primarily with
Asheville concerns of desegregation, the quality of education for black and
white students, and the busing program ; as well as proposals and grievances,
and ways to mediate these problems. As the inventory indicates, the sermons are filed in notebooks, three to a document case, and additional material is stored in folders in the final two document cases. [update: sermons had been placed in archival folders, as 2005 inventory indicates] |

Biography |
Born 1910, Frank E. Ratzell was a native of Philadelphia. He was a graduate of the University of Maine and of the Bangor Theological Seminary, and before he entered the ministry he was a newspaper writer. After he became a minister Ratzell held pastorates in both Maine and Massachusetts, before moving to Asheville. On November 17, 1951 Ratzell became the pastor of the First Congregationalist Church, Asheville, North Carolina. There he immediately became a part of the desegregation movement. In his sermons he encouraged his congregation to unify the races and to see all people as children of God, no matter what their race. During his years as pastor Ratzell was a member of the board for United Social Services and was Vice President of the Asheville Ministerial Association. He was also a member of the Human Relations Council, which quietly aided in the integration of local restaurants and motels. Ratzell was also an announcer over the Asheville Radio Stations WWNC and WLOS, hosting a program called “Religion in News” for the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Sometime late in 1962 Ratzell entered the hospital and only returned to work for a brief time after January of 1963. He died in 1964. |
