Scope and Contents

Eight oral histories collected in 2007 and 2008 by UNC Asheville students as part of the Arts 310 class. In 2007, in conjunction with the Mountain Voices Alliance, the interviews were with people involved in the government and development of Asheville. The 2008 interviews were with participants working with the Peace Garden at Vance Elementary School in Asheville.

Kitty Love Brown discusses the Arts2People social service outreach organization, and her work with the Downtown Asheville Commission.

Biography

Kitty Love Brown served on the Downtown Asheville Commission, reviewing development plans for the central business district that are 36,000 square feet or greater. She was inspired to work with the commission through being an Asheville business owner and tattoo artist for many years.

Robyn Cape describes the role of city council, and her belief that the focus of a council member is on researching and understanding the complexity of the issues and looking out for all the interests in the community.

At the time of this interview, Robyn had been on the Asheville City Council for 2 years. She moved to Asheville in 2007 to join family and friends.

Biography

Reid Thompson grew up in Brevard, North Carolina, and attended Appalachian State, majoring in Real Estate Management, finance and insurance. After living in Boston, Thompson moved back to Western North Carolina and became involved with real estate, becoming a developer and and investor in real estate.
