PRESENTING 19 BUSBEE ROAD, BILTMORE FOREST.
GENERAL BUILDING PRODUCTS COMPANY

BILTMORE STATION, ASHEVILLE, N. C
PHONE 2448
WHEN we build let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for
present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our
descendants will thank us for, and let us think as we lay stone on stone
that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred, because our
hands have touched them and that men will say as they look upon the labor
and wrought substance of them "See! This our Fathers did for us."

THERE is no better way for a dealer in building materials to
demonstrate the worth of his wares than to incorporate as many of them as
possible in a single house. The result, in this case, has been extremely
gratifying.
In selecting a location for this house, Biltmore Forest was chosen. Long
famed for its natural beauty and charming homes, Biltmore Forest enjoys a
widespread reputation as the ideal location for ideal living.
Designed by the Architects' Association of Western North Carolina, there
are no predominating characteristics except a marked Colonial influence.
This house was built to demonstrate the way in which the building
materials distributed by this company can in themselves lend character.
Along with this general distinction goes the permanence, fire-resistance,
economy, and beauty of these lines of building materials. We dare say
there is not another house in Western North Carolina more impervious to
extremes in temperature, more economical to maintain—more livable.
Those materials which we do not sell and which are used in the house
measure up to our standards. There was no reason to go half way—we
chose the best in every case.
The house was built not only to demonstrate sound construction in every
detail to those who intend to build, but to point out certain features
which can be added to houses already constructed in order to obtain
maximum efficiency.

SPECIFICATION TOUR
FURNISHINGS
INTERIOR HALL
Upon entering the front hallway one's attention is attracted to the
graceful stairway in white and mahogany, the lines of which -are enhanced
by the charming Cocoa-beige "Spring Song" paper. So little furniture can
be used in the introduction to a house that great care should be exercised
in its choice. In this instance a wall table and inviting chair from
Burton's are considered essential. The Middlemount flowers add a final
touch of beauty. The Oriental scatter rug leads to the stair carpet of a
durable and practical twisted weave. The etched colonial lantern with
brass trimming adds interest.
LIVING ROOM
The paper, "Triumph," in
soft green gives a feeling of restfulness. Green tinted woodwork adds
spaciousness and frames the Verde antique marble and black matt tile of
the fireplace, the center of interest in the living room. The wine of the
draperies is taken from the Sarouk rug, as are the incidental colors. The
Chippendale, Heppelwhite and Sheraton furniture was selected for comfort
as well as beauty. The 1. E. S. lamps and crystal fixtures near the
fireplace are carefully placed for distribution of light and softening of
color at night, and, along with the ornaments form a pleasing pattern
during the day.
DINING ROOM
The large picture window
looking into the forest is the focal point of the dining room and is
flanked by corner cupboards. White was chosen for the woodwork, cupboards,
and paper background to give simplicity and add to the size of the room.
Interiors of the cupboards are painted a pastel shade which tones in with
:he predominating color of the room and gives depth to the recess of the
cabinets. The paper speaks of "Fall Harvest" in an artistic array of
fruits in colors. The Duncan Phyfe table, with banquet ends to be used as
serving tables, chairs copied after the master, and an interesting
sideboard are all in Mahogany with an old-world finish. The dining table
was arranged by The Artisans' Shop of Biltmore Forest. The central
lighting fixture is of imported wood polished prisms with silver finish
trimmings. Hammered Rep in green with a gray cast was selected for the
draperies so as to pick up the foliage color both inside and out, creating
an illusion in softening outlooks. The plum colored rug from Ivey's has a
brocade effect acquired by a special weaving which combines looped pile in
two heights.
KITCHEN
*Coppes Custom Built Kitchen Units, gleaming white with work surfaces of
Chinese Red Duro-seal and stainless steel, an enamel two-compartment sink
with chromium faucets and a concealed spray attachment, makes an
interesting unit for a very business-like kitchen. A *Majestic garbage
disposal, and a fan for the removal of odors; concealed in a duct formed
by the furred ceiling, are added modern touches. Walls and ceiling are
finished with *R. I. W. White Fume Proof Enamel. The windows are treated |
 |
| gen07 |
page 6 |
with oiled silk in red, designed to carry out
the general cheerfulness and allow the maximum amount of light to enter.
The kitchen also contains a Multi Breaker Panel, eliminating fuse plugs
and controlling all lighting circuits in the house. Here you will find the
latest model De-Luxe Electric Refrigerator, a cabinet type, double oven
Electric Range, a Silex coffee maker, Mixmaster, and Toastmaster, all
displayed by Carolina Power and Light Company. The linoleum flooring from
Ivey's is standard grade inlaid, using black (for depth), red and cream.
The striking central lighting fixture is of frosted glass and crystal,
supplemented by a soffit light directly over the sink. DEN
The walls of panelled knotty white pine with built-in book shelves have
been stained and waxed, forming a fitting background for the master of the
house. A maple desk is placed end-to-window for light during the day, the
desk chair is upholstered in leather, as is the large reading chair with
its lamp. Draperies are Chinese red cretonne, matching the easy chair,
beside which is a Zenith radio, armchair model. Here the rug is a
Provincial pattern. The central lighting fixture is of maple and polished
brass. The sound-deadened walls afford a quiet, restful room.
POWDER ROOM
The India Ivory fixtures form a pleasing contrast with the *Johns-Manville
Black Asbestos Wainscoting and chromium mouldings. The Powder Room is also
enhanced by the "Ivy" paper—white leaves on silver, with silver tinted
ceiling. The curtains are coral colored, the floor is Ceramic tile in
black and ivory. A shelf of black glass has been fitted into the corner,
thus utilizing a small space to the utmost convenience. It is backed with
a triple mirror of bevelled plate glass. The mirrored wall cabinet is
equipped with a Lumaline light. Chromium accessories are interesting. The
walls are also treated for sound deadening. The effect of the Powder Room
is strictly modern.
SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY
The informal curtains of beige taffeta with
cord of acqua were chosen to harmonize with the paper and make a
harmonious link between the bedrooms. Its features have been described
elsewhere.
MASTER BEDROOM
We dare use more color in the bedrooms, attempting to make them more
interesting either by harmony or contrast. The Master Bedroom is papered
in "Magnolia," a beautiful, soft yellow with a clear-cut pattern in white
and silver gray. The curtains of gray mist Ninon trimmed with silver ball
fringe, softly draped for grace, offsets the yellow. Blue is introduced in
small quantity for contrast. The furniture is a lovely Colonial pattern in
Mahogany with twin beds and twin tables, each with its reading lamp. The
spreads are of soft, gray satin made simply and trimmed lightly with blue.
Scatter rugs are used.
DRESSING ROOM
A yellow "Stripe" paper continues the color note of the bedroom, repeated
in the woodwork and built-in wardrobe with its spacious drawers. The gray
mist curtains and a Mahogany dressing table tie in the surroundings
without abrupt change.
MASTER BATH
The Master Bedroom and the Daughter's Room adjoin this bath, and when
guests are present she will share it. The tile floor in lemon and white
and the *Johns-Manville Wainscoting in both plain and tile den in blue set
off the white Crane plumbing fixtures with their chromium trim. "Water
Lilies" paper in silver and yellow—of unusual beauty—calls for a simple
yellow curtain both at the window and over the tub. An automatic
*door-seal keeps noise in, a Trane Radiator supplies quick heat, the
medicine cabinet is concealed behind a mirror with tubular light brackets,
the soft yellow towels and bath mat make of this room a good place to
start the day. The plumbing access panel has been converted into a
built-in tilting clothes hamper.
DAUGHTER'S ROOM
"Flower Tracery" in robin's egg blue, with a pattern which appears to be
etched in white and dubonnet, is a paper background for the dainty dotted
Swiss curtains, most appropriate for a |
 |
| gen08 |
page 7 |
young girl's room. Some occasional pieces of
furniture in bone white keep the room light and youthful. The bed,
dressing table, chest and chairs are traditional. The bed spread of the
same material as the curtains put together with beading, and a ribbon to
harmonize with the general coloring of the room, add a dainty and
attractive note. A Broadloom rug in dubonnet and a semi-indirect lighting
fixture of opal glass, empire white and gold complete a most satisfactory
room. GUEST BATH
A very smart "Ribbon Plaid" paper, *Johns-Manville Asbestos Wainscoting in
snowy white with *Chromium Finish Mouldings and a Ceramic Tile floor in
pink, orchid and white, make an effective background for white plumbing
fixtures. The curtain of flesh pink picks up the softer tones. Radiator,
medicine cabinet, door-seal, and lighting fixtures are the same as in the
Master Bath, but the towels and bath mat are in dubonnet. An interesting
built-in closet with sliding doors contains shelves for linen storage as
well as two tilting clothes hampers.
GUEST BEDROOM
A dignified room which will accommodate either man or woman guest has been
accomplished by the use of "Drapery" paper, with its classic gold pattern.
The furniture is traditional Colonial, the rug is dubonnet, a
semi-indirect lighting fixture, incidental lamps at the dressing table, by
the bed and the upholstered chair, and the curtains of Chantilly lace all
accent the gold of the paper.
MAID'S ROOM
The Maid's Room has a private stairway leading from the kitchen.
*Johns-Manville Bevel Plank covers the "walls and *Johns-Manville
Bevel Tile the ceiling. Planks and tile are both unfinished. The
curtains of chintz add an air of cheerfulness against an otherwise neutral
background. The furniture of Maple looks very well against the colorful
oval braided rugs.
MAID'S BATH
*Johns-Manville Scored Hardboard is used to waincot height,
*Johns-Manville Plain Hard-board above, with a ceiling of *Johns-Manville
Bevel Tile. Crane plumbing fixtures, Trane concealed radiator, and
curtains of Chintz complete the equipment.
TRUNK STORAGE
Just across the hallway from this bath is a completely floored storage
room of ample size.
BASEMENT LOUNGE
The refreshment bar in the turn of the stair is finished in Rose colored
*Flexboard with chromium mouldings, all being set off by the comfortable
chromium and leather furniture.
GAME ROOM
Covington Sports has created a real amusement spot in this Game Room. From
ping-pong equipment—games of all sorts—to an archery target with bows and
arrows, congenial friends and youngsters, too, can spend many happy hours
here. The curtains are of glazed chintz in a hunting print. The red trim
adds a definite color note.
LAUNDRY
Equipped in a modern fashion, the laundry shares the same room with the
heating equipment. |

THAT'S perfectly all right, Mr. Burton, am glad your customers had such
excellent taste. You have three or four other suites of dining room
furniture alongside, if I remember correctly. We can use any one of them
for they are all excellent."
We could go on for pages describing our four floors of lovely furniture to
fit any room or combination of rooms, but it would not put over the point
any better than this actual 'phone conversation with Mrs. Johnston.,
decorator of the Triple Insulated House.
Burton's will be very glad for you to regard any piece of furniture in the
house
as its standard quality. Nothing was ordered just for this job—it is
all from our regular stocks. And we hope that this will convey the
impression to you that Burton's is the place in Asheville for good
furniture. Thirty-four years is a long time to be in one business, at
least, it is long enough to have found the manufacturers who build quality
furniture with fine woods.
This, we imagine, was why Mr. Howell lost no time in discussing the
furniture for his Triple Insulated Home with Burton & Son at 36 Hay wood
Street in Asheville. And we are glad to have co-operated, as we will be to
assist you in choosing an incidental chair or in furnishing a complete
house.
