Description This collection consists of correspondence, letters, speeches, and other items spanning the years from 1890 to 1973, concerning the life and career of one of mountain region's best known businessmen. Reuben B. Robertson arrived in Canton, North Carolina, as a representative of Champion Papers of Hamilton, Ohio, when the North Carolina plant was begun in 1905. He stayed on, playing an active role in developing the plant and guiding the company's forestry operations. He negotiated with the federal government during the 1930s concerning the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and its inclusion of Champion company lands. He spoke to numerous local groups about conservation, business needs, labor policies, and other topics of concern to himself and to his field of business. During his career Robertson was both president and chairman of the board of this large company. The collection includes substantial material about the paper industry in general, and Champion Papers in particular.

Robertson's papers include business records, along with personal tax, real estate and financial records. Also included are the texts of many of his speeches delivered before local civic groups in western North Carolina. Many of these contain themes which express his concern about continuing "free enterprise." There is also material pertaining to Robertson's interest in the genealogy of his father's family in the Shetland Islands, and correspondence and other materials relating to his travels there in search of this information.

Among other items related to this collection are a masters thesis by E. Kaye Lanning, titled Champion Fibre Company: Industry in Western North Carolina.

Related bound volumes, also by Allen Roudebush, are Profiles of Champions, concerning employees of the Ohio branch of the company, Champion and the Smoky Mountain National Park, and Memoirs of George Smathers. Smathers was an attorney for the company during its earliest days, and later became an employee.

Biography

Reuben B. Robertson was born in 1879.  He was a forester with Champion Coated Paper Company in Hamilton, Ohio, and in 1906 he saw an opportunity in North Carolina and he founded the Champion Fiber Company in Canton, North Carolina, which provided the Hamilton Champion company with a supply of wood pulp, which the Hamilton mills made into paper.

Robertson married one of the daughters of Thomas Champion, the owner of the parent company, and on June 27, 1908 she gave birth to  Reuben B. Robertson, Jr.  In 1946 Robertson, Sr. became President of the parent Champion Paper and Fiber Company, and in 1950 he became chairman of the board. It was an office that stayed in the family, as he turned over the presidency to his son, Ruben Robertson, Jr..  The company remained family owned until the death of Robertsonís son, in a tragic car accident on March 13, 1960.  Robertson Sr. resigned from the board and died in 1972.
