Biography/History | Solon David Smart was born in Rutherford County, N.C. on October 15, 1908, and served in the army during World War II as a Lt. Colonel. After the war he ran a hardware business and served as Democratic Party chairman for Rutherford County. In 1963, Smart was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Asheville-Biltmore College (now UNCA) serving until June 30, 1965. He died March 10, 1999 in Cleveland County, N.C.
