Description

This collection consists of the original register books of a prominent stagecoach stop and inn operated by Bedford Sherrill, located in Hickory Nut Gap, at the upper, eastern end of the Fairview section [along the current U.S. highway 74], near the beginning of Hickory Nut Gorge. A short history of the inn, written by one of the donors of these register books, Mrs. James McClure (Elspeth) Clarke, is available in the Special Collections vertical file.

There are three volumes of the original log books. Volume one includes dates from July, 1850 through May, 1865, as a guest register. Accounting entries previous to this time, beginning in 1842 at the front of the volume, are found throughout volume one. Volume two contains guest registrations beginning in 1870, continuing into 1898. The first half of volume two also contains accounting entries from the early 1840s. Guest registrations in volume three begin in 1897, continuing into 1907 (with a 1909 entry at the end). Accounting entries, found also in the first half of volume three, are from 1853 through 1855.

The late D. Hiden Ramsey, a prominent Asheville newspaperman and writer on local history, provided typescript notes for the registers, originally bound into three small notebooks. The three older notebooks, due to their condition, have been combined into one new binder, divided by inserts to correspond to the original volume divisions. Each set of notes corresponds to a volume of the registers. Aside from two brief commentaries concerning place-names and transportation, the contents of the notes are biographical, concerning a selection of guests of the inn, and corresponding to the page numbers in each original register.
