NOT SO 'BACK OF BEYOND' |

This exhibit is the creation of individuals who live in both the rural and urban landscapes of western North Carolina. They all care deeply about their landscapes. In many ways the Blue Ridge Parkway is the mediated space between the urban and the rural landscape dweller, where ideas, interests and aesthetics related to those landscapes come together. It is a beautiful place and a healing place, but it is also a space behind a curtain. That curtain needs to be pulled aside from time to time to remind us of who we were, who we are, and who we may become through the use of our national parks and especially the Blue Ridge Parkway as it celebrates the 75th year of its existence. "Sometimes a landscape seems to be less a setting for the life of its inhabitants than a curtain behind which their struggles, achievements and accidents take place. For those who, with the inhabitants, are behind the curtains, landmarks are no longer geographic but also biographical and personal." John Berger, A Fortunate Man, (1976) |
