Historical Note

The records of the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville were acquired by UNC Asheville in July 2007, and Asheville City Council approved legal transfer of the material files and photographs on October 16, 2007. Between 2008 and 2015, additional materials were acquired from the Housing Authority.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains administrative records for the Redevelopment Commission of Asheville, as well as the official records of Housing Authority of the City of Asheville [HACA]. The records primarily pertain to several significant redevelopment projects undertaken in Asheville from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s, but records related to other smaller development and redevelopment projects, including those administered by the Housing Authority in its capacity as Redevelopment Commission for the City of Asheville, are also included.

The records generally include standard planning and development documents such as project area maps, surveys of the existing structures in the project area, redevelopment plans, appraisal reports, and ownership data. Also included are general project administrative documents such as correspondence, contracts, reports, news clippings, and summary documents. For several projects, records of acquisition, disposal, or rehabilitation of individual parcels, as well as the relocation of individual occupants are included.

Photographs of some properties and projects are included, as are publications related to urban renewal in Asheville and other areas,
