Scope and Contents

Comprises materials from the City of Asheville, including plats of the city from the first half of the 20th century, maps and aerials photographs from the 1950s and 1960s, documents from the planning board, and transportation advisory committee, and materials arising from highway projects. Also included are materials believed to have been given to the City by the activist Julian Price. These comprise 700 transparencies of road and other conditions, and issues of "City Watch" magazine.

Transparencies 

Box 4 

Approximately 700 35mm transparencies, believed to have been taken by environmental activists Julian Price and Meg McLeod in the early 1990s, and given to Asheville traffic engineer Michael Moule. Although mainly taken in the Asheville area, some are from other areas of NC ,and other states. The subjects covered include interstates, trees, flowers and greenways, Broadway Avenue, PAL, and road conversions

Plat Books 

Box OS1 

Plat book 1: Plats primarily cover 1918 to 1920 and generally relate to properties in Asheville and West Asheville although some are in outlying communities such as Black Mountain and Leicester. [69 plats] 

Plat book 3: Plats primarily cover 1919 to 1923 with the majority from 1922. Properties are mostly in Asheville, but some are in outlying communities such as Skyland and Leicester, while others cover the Kenilworth area that now forms part of Asheville. [43 plats] 

Box OS2 

Plat book 7: One plat is from 1923, all others are from 1924 and 1925. Several plats cover subdivision of property in Buncombe County for realty companies. [87 plats] 

Box OS3 

Plat book 12: The majority of the plats are from 1926. There are some without location identifiers that can only be recorded as being within Buncombe County. Bound in the same book as plats 16 and 14. [36 plats] 

Plat book 14: The majority of the plats are from 1927. There is no clear pattern to property locations, and the last plat is numbered 104 suggesting that many are missing. Bound in the same book as plats 12 and 16. [25 plats] 

Plat book 16: Plats cover rural properties in the Reems Creek, Emma and Limestone communities. Bound in the same book as plats 14 and 12. [4 plats] 

Box OS4 

Plat book 800: City tax maps covering Asheville wards 1 to 9 inclusive. Maps for each ward are prefaced by an overview map of that ward and these overviews are dated February 20, 1940. Many pages include hand written revisions to street names and layouts in addition to some property owners names. [161 plats] [This book was not originally numbered but has been identified as 800 for reference]

Box OS5 

Plat book 4: The majority of the plats are from 1924 and cover Asheville, West Asheville and nearby communities, although there are some without location identifiers that can only be recorded as being within Buncombe County. [136 plats] 

Plat book 11: The majority of the plats are from 1926 although a loose plat from book 28 and dating from 1956 has been inserted. Most of the plats cover Asheville and West Asheville, often showing subdivisions and re-subdivisions of property, but there are some without location identifiers that can only be recorded as being within Buncombe County. [77 plats] 

Box OS6 

Plat book 198: Plats cover diverse locations, and a wide number of years, with the majority covering the period 1914 to 1917. Many of the numbered pages are blank, some pages have a lettered suffix, and some physical pages include more than one numbered plat. [300 plats] 

Plat book 500: This book covers plats originally numbered 39 to 158 inclusive (except book 154). The pages are numbered sequentially within the book, and the book has been identified as 500 for reference , and there is an index on the inside cover of the plat book that links pages back to original plat books and pagination. Many plats are not dated, but those that are, generally cover the last decade of the 19th century and the first of the 20th century. Most properties are in Asheville. [218 plats] 

Box OS7 

Plat book 700: City tax maps covering Asheville wards 1 to 6 inclusive, Beaverdam, Haw Creek and Biltmore , showing street layouts, property lines, and changes to street names often through hand written revisions. Undated, but appear to pre-date book 800 which is dated 1940. [151 plats] [This book was not originally numbered but has been identified as 700 for reference] 

Box OS8 

Plat book 5: Plats primarily cover 1923 - 1924, although a loose page from plat book 26 and dating from 1952 has been inserted. Most cover Asheville, but some relate to properties in outlying communities such as Swannanoa, Black Mountain, Limestone and Oteen, and there are some without location identifiers that can only be recorded as being within Buncombe County. [91 plats] 

Plat book 6: The majority of the plats are from 1925, and relate to properties in Asheville and West Asheville, but there are some without location identifiers that can only be recorded as being within Buncombe County. [123 plats] 

Box OS9 

Plat book 10: Plats primarily cover 1925 and 1926 with most from 1926. Many relate to developments within Asheville such as Avondale, Beverly Hills and Hollywood. [100 plats] 

Plat book 600: Subdivision maps of Biltmore Village with an overview map underpinned by detailed views of lettered blocks. The plats are generally by Blair and Drane Inc. with property owned by the Appalachian Realty Co. [24 plats] [This book was not originally numbered but has been identified as 600 for reference] 

Box OS10 

Plat book 9: Plats primarily cover 1925 and 1926, with most properties being in Asheville and West Asheville. [136 plats] 

Plat book 13: Plats primarily cover 1926 and 1927, with many relating to property in West Asheville. Bound in the same book as plat 15. [84 plats] 

Plat book 15: Plats primarily cover 1927 and 1928, and the majority of the properties are in Asheville. The last plat is numbered 86 suggesting that many are missing. Bound in the same book as plat 13. [32 plats]
